O by Daniel Reuter & Umihara Chikara | 24.09 – 08.10.2025
Exhibition
O is a collaborative photographic project by Luxembourgish artist Daniel Reuter and Japanese artist Umihara Chikara, created during a one-month residency in Osaka in 2024. The work stems from Reuter’s long-standing interest in modernist architecture and the utopian spirit often embodied by World Expos—events where nations come together to showcase visions of progress, cultural exchange, and shared futures.
Initially drawn to the site of Expo ’70—a landmark moment in Osaka’s history and a showcase of 1960s Metabolist architecture—the artists expanded their focus beyond the former fairgrounds. Their research led them to the city’s port: a vast, layered landscape of artificial islands, industrial sites, and residential enclaves on the periphery of the metropolis.
The resulting images trace a fragmented topography shaped by human ambition and infrastructure: elevated highways looping through the air, fences marking boundaries, and waterways forming shifting thresholds between land and sea. Seen through the distinct yet complementary lenses of both photographers, O reveals Osaka as a city in flux, where past visions of the future meet the lived realities of the present.
The exhibition exemplifies Japanese-Luxembourg co-creation and coincides with the publication of the book O by Roma Publications.
